Sundara Kandam – A Divine Chapter of Beauty and Bravery
The fifth chapter of the Ramayana, Sundara Kandam, truly lives up to its name – Sundaram, which means beautiful, not just in form but in divine essence. It exemplifies Satyam (Truth), Shivam (Auspiciousness), and Sundaram (Beauty).
This chapter marks a dramatic turning point. Rama, overwhelmed by Sita's loss, finds hope through Hanuman’s unwavering devotion and courage. Hanuman's journey to Lanka, his encounter with Sita, and his fiery warning to Ravana restore colour and purpose to Rama and Sita's lives.
A celebrated verse captures the spirit:
Sundarē Sundarō Rāmaḥ
Sundarī kathā Sītā
Sundaram vanaṁ, kavyam, mantram – kim na sundaram?
In this production by Sri Mudhraalaya, Sundara Kandam is retold through Bharatanatyam. Set in black and white costumes, colour appears with Hanuman, symbolizing hope and transformation. The story unfolds in three acts: Hanuman’s journey, his meeting with Sita, and his fiery confrontation with Ravana, concluding on an auspicious note.
